Coping with Election Anxiety: An Essential Guide

With tonight's debate and the 2024 election approaching, feeling anxious is beyond normal. The news, debates, and constant updates can make it seem like everything is on the line, which is too overwhelming for our brains and bodies to handle. But don’t worry, there are ways to manage the stress without feeling like you're drowning.

1. Take Media Breaks

Let’s be honest, 24/7 news and social media won’t stop talking about the election. But YOU can step away. It’s okay to take breaks from the updates. Check in at set times during the day and avoid doom-scrolling before bed—your brain needs and deserves a break.

2. Do Something About It

Feeling powerless can fuel anxiety. So, take action! Make sure you're registered to vote, encourage your friends to do the same, or volunteer for a cause you care about. When you focus on what you can do, it can make everything feel a bit more manageable.

3. Talk It Out (or Not)

Sometimes, venting with friends or family helps. But other times, it just adds fuel to the fire. Know your limits—if political talk stresses you out, it’s absolutely okay to steer conversations in a different direction. And if someone pushes, don’t be afraid to say, "I just need a break from politics today."

4. Practice Self-Care

Stress from the election can sneak into your daily life, so make sure you’re balancing it with activities you love. Exercise, cook a nice meal, meditate, or binge-watch something non-political. Take care of yourself first!

5. Remember, It’s Okay to Disconnect

Elections come and go, and while they’re important, your mental health matters more. Take time to unplug and focus on the things that bring you joy and calm.

So as the 2024 election looms, don’t let it take over your life. Stay informed, but also take care of yourself—and remember that although it's scary, it’s okay to not have all the answers right now.
